Educational Institutions
Educational institutions traditionally use the domain ".edu"; in order to use that domain, a group must meet a number of criteria in order to register for it. Traditionally, they must be a nationally accredited college or university.
The .edu domain does not guarantee academic integrity, however. Various programs within the university, and professors and students alike are often granted pages and spaces within that university's domain for online publication. It is up to the individual colleges and universities to set their own policies and rules for publication; most do not have an oversight group capable of policing all pages posted on their domain.
In addition, it is important to note that academic institutions can be public or private; they have their own individual biases, and that information posted at an .edu must be scrutinized and analyzed just as thoroughly as that posted on any other domain.
